Career Guidance
The Guidance Department offers a full range of activities and interventions which assist students in making decisions in their lives. For second level students, these choices are focused on developments in three key areas:
- Personal
- Educational
- Vocational /Career
At Ursuline College Sligo, we aim to provide a comprehensive service to students through a range of activities, which promote a student’s ‘s personal growth, self- knowledge and self – esteem and which help them to becomes more aware of their emotions, abilities, interests and special aptitudes. We aim to support students in making and implementing appropriate life choices and plans.
The work of the Guidance Counsellor consists of the following functions:
Counselling - Personal, Educational & Career
Support for students’ emotional, academic, and career development.
Personal & Social Development
Encouraging growth in personal skills and social interactions.
Psychological Testing
Assessment to better understand students’ needs and potential.
Career Information Management
Guidance on career paths and future opportunities.
Consultations with Parents, Staff, and Community
Collaboration with families and educators for holistic support.
Vocational Preparation – Job Search Skills, Work Experience
Practical skills for career readiness, including internships and job search techniques.
Referrals
Access to external resources and professionals when needed.
Evaluation of the School’s Guidance Needs and Services
Regular review and improvement of the school’s guidance programmes.
Career Guidance
Guidance refers to both the specific guidance programme delivered by the Guidance Counsellor and to whole school supports in which all school staff are involved.
The Guidance Counsellor is available to meet with students throughout the school day either by appointment or referral.
All Transition Year students have a double guidance class per week. All Fifth and Sixth Year students have a weekly guidance class.
The Guidance Counsellor has access to other year groups for guidance classes throughout the year. The Guidance Counsellor fulfils her role through a variety of interventions as described in the Role Document of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors.
Parents/Guardians are always welcome to meet with the Guidance Counsellor at information evenings, parent/teacher meeting and on request by contacting the school.
